How Jeffrey Dahmer’s first murder happened
On June 18, 1978, Steven Hicks was hitchhiking to make it to a rock concert. A car pulled over—Dahmer was behind the wheel. He saw in Hicks someone young and trusting, approachable, and easy to manipulate. Dahmer took him home, offered him beer, and put on some music. But when Steven said he was ready to leave, Dahmer panicked at the thought of being alone again. In a desperate impulse, he struck the young man with a 10-pound dumbbell and strangled him to death. Afterwards, he dismembered the body and disposed of it in garbage bags.
Jeffrey Dahmer’s Modus Operandi
This first murder marked the beginning of his modus operandi:
- Attraction and control → He sought out men he found attractive.
- Preventing abandonment → His fear of rejection and abandonment became one of his driving forces.
- Total possession → What began as a desperate attempt to keep someone’s company eventually escalated into more extreme practices.
